1. Cirque de Cilaos
As you might know, Reunion island is a volcanic island with several cirques. These are the remains of ancient collapsed volcanoes and they are some of the island’s most iconic natural sites.
The island has 3 cirques: Cilaos, Mafate and Salazie. They are all located more or less in the center of the island and quite close to each other.
Cirque de Cilaos, one of the best places to visit in Reunion, is the southernmost one. It is located at an altitude of 1200 m.
What makes it unique is the very winding road you have to take to get there. It’s called “the road with 400 bends”! (Be careful if you get car sick 😬 )
It’s also one of the most beautiful scenic roads on the island and viewpoints are really impressive. It takes about 1 hour to reach the cirque.
You need to be very careful when driving up and also on the way back down because turns are tight and the road is narrow (and many drivers go quite fast!).
Once in Cilaos, you will discover a charming village with shops, a school and even a spa center. Around the village, several hiking trails, from easy to more challenging, allow you to explore the cirque.
You should first go to tourist office to get hiking map, it will make things much easier.
During your walk, you really shouldn’t miss the short hike up to Roche Merveilleuse to enjoy the exceptional panoramic view over the entire cirque!
When visiting Cilaos, you can also discover 2 main local specialties: lentils and Cilaos wine! These products, grown right in the heart of the cirque, make great souvenirs or gifts to bring back home.
If you want to discover the most beautiful spots in Cilaos without worrying about the map, you can opt for a guided hike.
You will start from Cilaos village and explore the most beautiful areas of the cirque, passing by several waterfalls and natural pools and through Bras Rouge valley. You will end the day with a swim in pure river water flowing straight down from Piton des Neiges! This guided hike is about 15 km long and you should plan between 5 and 6 hours of walking.
Book your hike in Cilaos, with a local guide, by clicking on the button below:

2. Piton de la Fournaise
Another must-see site in Reunion Island is Piton de la Fournaise!
You have probably already heard about it. This still active volcano rises to more than 2600 m high in the southeast of the island. It’s one of the attractions you simply can’t miss during your trip to Reunion.
It’s actually one of the most active volcanoes in the world. If you’re lucky, it might even be erupting during your trip!
To reach the summit of Piton de la Fournaise by car (you can also do it on foot, I will talk about it a bit further down), you need to head to “La Cité du Volcan” in Plaine des Cafres. This is the starting point of the ascent.
From there, follow the road going up to the volcano. It’s a truly incredible road with a surprising succession of very diverse landscapes: grassy fields at the bottom, then tundra-like scenery, desert-like stretches and cliffs above the clouds.
The higher you go, the more the landscape changes suddenly. Sometimes you will feel like you’re in a totally different setting from one bend to the next!
The highlight is at 2200m above sea level, when you arrive at Plaine des Sables. Here you will face a lunar landscape. You will really feel like you’re on another planet or on a movie set!
Plan at least half a day or even the whole day to drive up to the volcano at your own pace and take the time to snap plenty of pictures.
You can also drive around the volcano from the south via road N2. This route allows you to admire its opposite side and walk across frozen lava flows. However, from this side you can’t access the summit.
After crossing Plaine des Sables you will reach Pas de Bellecombe, where you can park and enjoy an incredible view of the main crater of Piton de la Fournaise.
Pas de Bellecombe is the main gateway to the summit of the volcano. If the volcano is dormant during your visit, you will be able to enter the enclosure and continue on foot. You should plan around 4 hours of walking to circle the crater.
However, if you’re there during an eruption, the enclosure will be closed. In that case you can walk around it to enjoy views of the lava flows.
If you’re lucky enough to be on vacation in Réunion Island during an eruption, the best is to do the night hike. The show of lava fountains in the dark is truly breathtaking!
Park at Pas de Bellecombe at dusk and follow the path on foot to walk around the enclosure.
Don’t worry, you won’t have any trouble finding your way, you just need to follow the other visitors. There are always lots of people here on eruption nights.
Bring a flashlight and warm clothes because at night it’s really cold up there!
If you prefer being accompanied to climb to the summit of Piton de la Fournaise, you should opt for this hike with an experienced guide!
Not only will you feel safer, but you will also learn a lot about the history of the place, its geology, fauna and flora.
Book your guided hike at Piton de la Fournaise by clicking below:
As I was saying, it’s also possible to do the entire ascent of Piton de la Fournaise on foot. Reserved for experienced hikers, this adventure takes place over several days starting from Cité du Volcan. You can sleep in inns and stopover lodges along the route.
At Piton de la Fournaise there is an unusual activity you should really do to discover the volcano in a different way: a guided excursion inside lava tunnels.
During this 3-hour caving guided tour, you will explore an incredible underground world, inside an ancient lava flow!
You need to book this exceptional experience in advance by clicking on the button below:
For budding adventurers, here are 2 more thrilling activity ideas I recommend at Piton de la Fournaise:
- Helicopter flight over the volcano, an extraordinary experience you need to book here.
- Electric quadbike excursion to Piton de Bert, including a memorable crossing of Plaine des Sables! Click here to book.

3. Mafate Cirque
If you’re looking for the best things to do in Reunion island and you love hiking, you should definitely go explore Mafate cirque!
Among the 3 cirques of the island, it’s the most remote. To get there, forget the car: there is no road at all!
Inside Mafate, access is only possible on foot or by air. Locals are actually supplied by helicopter on a regular basis.
This isolated location, cut off from the rest of the island, makes Mafate a particularly unspoiled, timeless place.
A real hiker’s paradise, Mafate offers no less than 140 km of trails, small picturesque villages and natural landscapes that will take your breath away.
You will also find the famous Piton Maïdo there, one of the best-known mountains in Réunion. From its summit, you can enjoy one of the best viewpoints on the whole island (I tell you more about it a bit further down in the article).
Here are the different access points if you want to reach Mafate on foot:
- From Cilaos cirque via Col du Taibit
- Via Rivière des Galets on the west coast of the island
- Via Hauts de Saint Gilles passing by Piton Maïdo
- From Sans-Soucis in Hauts de Saint Paul
- From Dos d’Ane on the west coast of the island
- From Salazie cirque via Col des Bœufs.
If you want to really explore Mafate, you can go on a multi-day trek and sleep in guesthouses and bed and breakfasts that welcome many hikers every year.
You can also opt for shorter hikes by following some of the trails. If it’s your first time there, you should really go with a guide.
The 5 to 6-hour guided hike organized by Bureau Montagne Réunion allows you to discover some of the most beautiful parts of the site, from Rivière des Galets to Cayenne islet. Another strong point is that it also includes the 4×4 transfer to the start of the trail, as well as picnic.
Book your spot now for your guided hike in Mafate by clicking here.
You’re going hiking in Mafate? You should pack warm and waterproof clothes because the site is at altitude and it’s often damp and cold.
If you go without a guide, make sure you plan your day properly. Start early in the morning and always keep in mind that night falls very early in Réunion (between 5 and 6 pm depending on the season).

4. Hermitage beach
Reunion Island is not only mountains, craters and volcanoes: you will also find of course paradise beaches!
So between 2 hikes, you should definitely plan a few relaxing days by the sea in your itinerary.
I especially recommend spending some time on the beautiful Hermitage beach, located in the northwest near Saint Gilles les Bains.
It’s one of the best beaches to see in Reunion island.
With its crystal-clear water and coconut trees, it’s the perfect place to swim, go snorkeling or simply relax in the sun.
This beach has the strong point of being protected by coral reef and offering shallow waters, so you can swim there safely. If you’re visiting Reunion with family, you will really enjoy it with your kids!
Along the beach, you will also find cafés, restaurants and shops.
If you’re looking for peace and quiet, you should plan to go to the beach on a weekday. Locals usually go to the beach on Sunday, so Hermitage beach is often packed on weekends.

5. Salazie cirque
Let’s continue with the cirques of Reunion Island. I now want to tell you about Salazie cirque!
Nicknamed the “cirque of a thousand waterfalls”, it’s the greenest of the three. It’s overlooked by Belouve forest and home to one of the most famous waterfalls on the island: Voile de la Mariée waterfall.
One of Salazie’s strong points is the cultivation of watercress and chayote (also called christophine), which thrive here thanks to the particularly humid climate.
Salazie cirque is located in the very heart of Reunion Island. Unlike Mafate, it’s accessible by car. To get there, you need to take RD48 from Saint André.
Take your time on this road because it’s beautiful and really deserves a few stops to enjoy the views over gorges and waterfalls!
Inside this exceptional cirque, you will find lush nature, kilometers of walking trails and charming little creole villages. You really shouldn’t miss a visit to Hell Bourg, one of the most beautiful villages of France (I talk about it in detail just after).
The best way to discover Salazie is to plan 2 to 3 days. Just like in Cilaos or Mafate, hikers will have a great time on the kilometers of trails that cross the cirque. Several guesthouses allow you to stop for the night.
If exploring Salazie on your own doesn’t really appeal to you, you should opt for a guided hike. No risk of getting lost, you will be accompanied by a passionate guide who will take you to the most beautiful places in the cirque and tell you a lot about its natural and historical heritage.
I recommend this 13 km guided hike. You will walk for about 6 hours through magical landscapes. You will first cross the picturesque village of Hell Bourg before discovering a beautiful forest that leads to a hot spring!
You need to book your guided hike in Salazie directly by clicking on the button below:

6. Domaine du Café Grillé
Among the best places to visit in Reunion island, I recommend Domaine du Café Grillé to dive into the history of Reunion coffee.
This botanical garden is located in the southwest near Saint-Pierre city.
There, you will discover the different stages of coffee production and you will be able to taste freshly roasted beans.
You will start with a visit of the botanical garden (self-guided or guided, as you prefer), which is home to around 800 species of aromatic and ornamental plants and fruit trees.
After the visit, a tasting session is organized inside the coffee bar. You will be invited to taste different varieties of coffee grown and roasted on site, including the famous (and delicious) Bourbon coffee.
You will also find a souvenir and local products shop.
This is a very pleasant and interesting visit if you like botanical gardens and if you want to learn more about coffee growing on Reunion Island.
Plan about 2 hours for the visit.

7. Boucan Canot beach
Here is another must-see beach in Reunion island: Boucan Canot beach. It’s also located in the northwest, about 10 minutes from Hermitage beach.
Ideal if you love water sports, Boucan Canot beach offers perfect waves for surfing and scuba diving. Its crystal-clear water and white sand will also delight beach lovers and swimmers. The swimming area is secured by a shark net.
If you enjoy snorkeling, this is one of the best spots in Reunion thanks to its reefs and corals which are home to many colorful fish.
This beach is also famous for its natural pool formed by volcanic rocks, perfect for children.
The atmosphere on this beach is friendly and lively, especially thanks to its restaurants, bars, shops and even an art gallery located just a few meters away.
Boucan Canot is definitely a place you shouldn’t miss if you want to enjoy the warm waters of Indian Ocean during your vacation in Reunion Island!

8. Grande Anse beach
Let’s continue with the most beautiful places to see in Reunion Island with Grande Anse beach.
Located in the south of the island, this superb crescent-shaped beach offers an exceptional setting with the combo of turquoise waters, white sand and coconut trees.
It lies at the foot of Piton Grande Anse, one of island’s coastal peaks.
This pretty beach also features a large grassy area where locals regularly gather with family for picnics.
Because of the swell and strong current, swimming is not recommended in Grande Anse outside the pool surrounded by volcanic rocks, located all the way to the left of the beach.
There are quite a lot of rocks even in the pool, so you should bring water shoes.
If you love walking, a trail allows you to walk around the beach, with a view of Cap de Petite Île.
During whale season (between May and October), Grande Anse beach is a great viewpoint! I was lucky enough to be there last year and I watched a real ballet of fins and humpback whale jumps for about 2 hours before sunset.

9. Reunion Island markets
You simply can’t visit Reunion Island without going for a stroll in the local markets.
Reunion markets are an essential part of local heritage and it’s really nice to wander around to soak up all the smells, colors and friendly atmosphere.
You will find everything there: from fresh local produce and spices to handcrafted items and local dishes you can eat on the go.
My favorite part of the market is definitely the exotic fruit stalls. They change with seasons: lychees at the end of the year, mangoes from October to January, longans around April–May… And then there are those you find all year round like bananas, famous Victoria pineapples, coconuts, papayas… I’m drooling just writing about them ^^
In craft markets like in Saint-Pierre or Saint-Paul, you will also find plenty of pretty souvenirs to bring back in your luggage: handmade jewelry, tableware, decorative posters, clothes, etc.
Main markets to see in Reunion Island are:
- Étang Salé les Bains market: Sunday morning
- Saint-Pierre market: Saturday morning
- Saint-Paul market: Friday all day + Saturday morning
- Chaudron market (in Saint-Denis): Wednesday morning + Sunday morning

10. Strolling around Étang Salé
Another place to see on Reunion Island: the village of Étang-Salé-les-Bains!
Étang Salé is a coastal village in the south of the island, known for its black sand beach and natural saltwater pond.
There is a beautiful walk to do along the coastline. The starting point is at Le Gouffre, where you will find a parking lot that makes it easy to park.
Le Gouffre is a geological formation carved into volcanic rock, where waves crash in a really impressive way. You can watch this show safely from behind the barrier, then start your walk following the coast.
You can also go for a guided segway tour on a trail that goes through Étang Salé forest, then along the lagoon and ends at Bassin Pirogue. During this guided excursion you will ride down black sand slopes, slalom between trees and enjoy magnificent viewpoints over the ocean.
Book your segway tour in Étang-Salé directly by clicking this button:
If you prefer mountain biking rather than segway, you should opt for this great “trott-cross” tour in Etang-Salé forest!
Trott-cross is a hybrid between a bike and an electric scooter that allows you to ride the steep trails of Etang-Salé forest without any effort.
You will be accompanied by an expert guide for a 2-hour ride adapted to your level. You can choose between a Discovery tour and a tour with technical sections only for mountain bike or motocross enthusiasts.
The most adventurous ones can even choose a night tour to discover Etang-Salé’s great landscapes under the moon!

11. La Pointe au Sel
If you’re wondering about the best things to do in Reunion Island, Pointe au Sel is another great place you should visit.
Located in the West, in Saint-Leu, it offers a superb panoramic view of the ocean.
As its name suggests, it’s also a historic site for sea salt production. Salt pans of Pointe au Sel were abandoned in the 1970s after centuries of use, before being restored and brought back into operation in 1996.
You can walk around the salt marshes and visit the Salt Museum, a small, very interesting and free museum. Dedicated to the history of the site and to ancestral salt production methods in Reunion Island, it is open from 9 am to 12 pm and from 1:30 pm to 5 pm every day, except on Monday.
You can also walk along the coast and admire the magical colors of the sky at dusk. Pointe au Sel is a perfect place to watch the sunset.
You will also find a small cove and a natural pool with crystal-clear water, called Bassin Caverne.
Be careful though, because even if many people swim there, swimming is actually forbidden as it’s dangerous due to the powerful waves that can suddenly flood the pool.

12. La Fenêtre des Makes
Do you like spectacular viewpoints? Then you shouldn’t miss going up to Fenêtre des Makes during your stay in Reunion Island.
This panoramic viewpoint is located at 1,587 m above sea level and offers a breathtaking view of Cilaos Cirque. It’s a perfect place to enjoy the scenery and take great pictures.
To reach the viewpoint of Fenêtre des Makes, you have several options:
- By car, following the forest road from Makes village (about 45 minutes from Saint-Louis). A parking lot allows you to park right next to the viewpoint.
- On foot during a hike in Makes forest.
The hiking option allows you to make the most of this extraordinary place and explore the beautiful forest surrounding the viewpoint.
It’s a great hike to do, in a lush forest on Cilaos ramparts. If you don’t know the area well, the best is to hire a local guide.
Click below to book your guided hike in Makes forest:

13. Le Trou de Fer
Let’s continue this list of best things to do in Reunion Island with Trou de Fer, another magical place you should definitely discover during your stay on the island.
This impressive waterfall is located in Bélouve forest, in Salazie cirque.
It’s one of the highest waterfalls in the world! The water falls directly into a chasm more than 300m deep.
It’s almost inaccessible, and you can only see it from above. As you can imagine, the show is extremely impressive and dizzying!
You can admire it from a viewpoint located in the heart of Bélouve forest. To get there, you need to put on your hiking shoes and go on a forest hike of about 4 hours round trip.
The magnificent panorama over Trou de Fer will be your reward for the effort.
For this hike, if you don’t know the area, the best is to go with a professional local guide.
Bureau Montagne Réunion organizes this excursion every week with an expert guide who will teach you a lot about the fauna and flora of the forest and will take you to Trou de Fer in complete safety.
Book your guide to hike to the Trou de Fer waterfall directly by clicking here.
But the best way to see Trou de Fer waterfall is to hop on a helicopter and fly over it! It’s the only way to get a full view of the chasm, and the show is simply incredible. You will feel like you’re in Jurassic Park!
On board the helicopter, you will even fly down inside the chasm to admire the waterfalls from up close. Thrills guaranteed!
Helicopter flights are a very popular activity in Reunion. In addition to Trou de Fer, your pilot will take you over some of the island’s most spectacular sites, especially the 3 cirques.
Of course, a helicopter flight in Reunion is a budget, but it’s really worth it. If you can afford it, you should not hesitate, as it’s an unforgettable experience, something you should do at least once in your life!
Book your helicopter flight now to admire the Trou de Fer and other wonders of Reunion island by clicking the button below:

14. La cascade Langevin
Langevin waterfall is another beautiful waterfall you should definitely see in Reunion Island. It’s also known as Grand Galet waterfall.
You will find it in Saint Joseph, in the far south of the island.
After a short hike, you will reach an idyllic setting to swim and relax in the heart of nature.
With its crystal-clear water and the lush vegetation all around, it’s the ideal place to cool off after a day of exploring. Don’t forget your swimsuit!
If you have an adventurous spirit and you’re looking for a unique activity to do in Reunion with family, as a couple or with friends, you should choose this canyoning route in Langevin river!
You will go downstream from the waterfall and follow the river like real adventurers. The route includes rappels, jumps into pools, natural slides and zipline descents. It’s accessible for beginners and for children from 12 years old.
To book your half-day canyoning in Langevin river in Saint Joseph, you just have to click this button:

15. The Voile de la Mariée Waterfall
At the beginning of the article, I told you that Salazie cirque was nicknamed cirque of a thousand waterfalls.
Here is another one you should see during your excursion in Salazie: Voile de la Mariée waterfall!
It’s probably the most famous waterfall in Reunion island and it’s located very close to Trou de Fer, still in Belouve forest.
This one is easier to access and directly visible from D48 road.
Voile de la Mariée waterfall owes its name to its white veil shape, reminiscent of a bride’s veil. You can reach it after a short walk to get even closer to this spectacular natural show.
This waterfall is as beautiful as it is mysterious, as it’s linked to a local legend:
“Once upon a time, a poor young girl and a rich man fell deeply in love. Although the girl’s father strongly opposed their union, the 2 lovers decided to get married without his consent.
When he heard about the planned wedding, the father, mad with rage, suddenly burst into the church with a saber, interrupting the ceremony and trying to kill the man.
The couple managed to escape and took refuge in Salazie heights. Unfortunately, in the panic, the young woman slipped from the edge of the mountain and fell, her white veil getting caught on the side of the cliff.
According to the legend, her father, overwhelmed by grief, cried day and night on the edge of the precipice where his daughter lost her life, creating a waterfall of tears.”
This tragic and poetic story gives this natural site an even more magical and mysterious aura!

16. Piton des Neiges
Reaching more than 3000 m above sea level, Piton des Neiges is the highest point on the island and even in all Indian Ocean.
This dormant volcano for over 12,000 years stands in the center of the island and is at the origin of its formation more than 3 million years ago.
Nicknamed Roof of Indian Ocean and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Piton des Neiges is definitely one of the must-see places during your holidays in Reunion.
If you’re feeling adventurous, you can plan a hike up to its summit, where you will enjoy spectacular views over the whole island.
But don’t be fooled by its name: there is no snow on this peak, but it can get really cold.
So if you’re planning an ascent, you should take enough warm clothes: fleeces, down jackets, hats, gloves and thermal underwear will for sure be useful!
There are 3 possible access routes for climbing Piton des Neiges:
- From Cilaos: the shortest but also steepest route to reach the summit. It’s a 12 km one-way hike (5/6 hours of walking), with a big elevation gain of +1700 m
- From Plaine des Cafres: 15.5 km to the summit (7 hours of walking), 1540 m elevation gain
- From Hell-Bourg village in Salazie: this is the easiest access but also the longest with 17 km one-way (7 hours of walking) and 2200 m elevation gain.
If it’s your first time, you should really do this ascent with a guide. I recommend this very well-organized guided ascent from Cilaos. You will head off for about 8 hours of adventure to conquer Piton des Neiges, with a certified mountain guide.
On top of making your hike safer, he will also teach you a lot about fauna and flora you will see along the way and about the island’s history.
Book your guided hike to Piton des Neiges summit by clicking on the button below:
For an even more exceptional experience, you can sleep in Caverne Dufour refuge and finish the last part of the ascent at night to admire the sunrise from Piton des Neiges summit!

17. Saint Gilles les Bains
You’re still wondering about the best things to do in Reunion Island? Saint-Gilles-les-Bains should definitely be on your itinerary!
You can enjoy the laid-back atmosphere of this coastal town to relax and have fun.
Saint Gilles les Bains is a bit like Saint-Tropez of Reunion Island. The town attracts tourists and locals all year long thanks to its fine sandy beaches, many water activities and trendy places.
On top of that, it’s warm and sunny all year round, so you can enjoy warm waters and lots of sunshine in any season.
Best things to do in Saint Gilles, on the west coast of Reunion Island:
- relaxing on the beach and swimming
- scuba diving
- going on a boat trip to observe whales and dolphins
- going transparent kayaking in the lagoon
- having lunch or dinner on a terrace
- going shopping
You should really try this transparent kayak trip in Saint-Gilles lagoon, I loved it.
This excursion allows you to discover the beautiful underwater ecosystem of the lagoon, and watch colorful fish and corals without getting wet!
On board your fully transparent kayak, you will have a direct view of the seabed right under your feet. If you’re lucky that day, you might even spot some rays and turtles!
You need to book this great transparent sea kayak excursion by clicking below (book as early as possible as it’s a very popular activity!):
To properly plan your visit to Saint-Gilles, you should read my detailed article: What to do in Saint-Gilles? Complete guide

From Cambaie, about 20 minutes from Saint Gilles, you can also go on a panoramic microlight flight and admire island’s beauty from the sky!
You will fly over Saint Gilles lagoon during an “air safari“, where you can see from above dolphins, whales and sea turtles swimming in the water.
You can choose between 2 options:
- First flight, a coastal flight of about 20 minutes over Saint-Paul
- “Must-see” flight, flying over all west and center of the island for about 35 minutes
To book your microlight flight in Reunion Island, it’s very simple, you just need to click directly below:

18. Watch sunrise at Maïdo
Among the best excursions to do in Reunion Island, you should definitely go watch sunrise from Piton Maïdo.
Maïdo rises to 2,190 m above sea level and overlooks West coast and center of the island.
At the top, a viewpoint offers a spectacular panoramic view over Mafate cirque. It’s the perfect place to admire sunrise in an outstanding setting.
Because of its unobstructed and unique view over Reunion’s grand landscapes, Maïdo viewpoint is known as “the Reunion island balcony“.
Watching sunrise from Maïdo is one of the most iconic and magical things to do in Reunion.
To enjoy this show, you will need to get up very early and drive at night all the way to the top of the piton.
Maïdo viewpoint is accessible by car, via a road that crosses a beautiful tamarin forest.
Once you arrive, you just have to settle down and wait for first sun rays to gradually light up Mafate.
Magical moment guaranteed!
Piton Maïdo is also the starting point of several hikes. I especially recommend this 6-hour guided hike starting from Maïdo viewpoint.
Accessible to children from 12 years old, this excursion takes you along Mafate cirque ramparts. Your guide will also take you to historic site La Glacière, a place full of history linked to slavery period.
Book your guided hike at Maïdo directly by clicking here.
And if you prefer driving to walking, here are 2 other ideas of things to do in Maïdo for adventurous travelers and sport lovers:
- A mountain bike descent from Maïdo summit down to the coast, to book here.
- A quad excursion from Saint Paul up to Piton Maïdo. Book your spot now by clicking here.

19. The Bebour Forest
Your Reunion itinerary can also take you to visit the Bebour Forest, one of the most unspoiled natural sites on the island.
This lush forest stretches across Plaine des Palmistes, between Piton des Neiges and cirques of Cilaos and Salazie.
For nature lovers, this humid tropical mountain forest is a real sanctuary. It shelters rich endemic wildlife and flora and is listed as World Heritage site.
It’s one of Reunion’s natural forests that is richest and best preserved today.
Many hiking trails for all levels cross Bébour Forest.
You should plan a walk there to discover its shaded paths and its outstanding biodiversity.
Along the way, remember to listen and look up. You might be lucky enough to spot some endemic and protected birds such as:
- Papangue, a majestic bird of prey (and the only endemic raptor in Réunion)
- Tec-tec, a small round passerine, curious and not very shy
- Tchitrec des Mascareignes, a beautiful little blue and rust-colored bird

20. Jardin des Parfums et des Epices
Let’s move on to a cultural visit you should do during your trip to Reunion, especially if you love plants!
The Jardin des Parfums et des Epices (Garden of Perfumes and Spices) is a botanical reserve located in Saint Philippe, in the southeast of the island.

21. Saint-Denis
If you visit Reunion island, you will probably pass by Saint-Denis, since this is where the island’s main airport is located.
Saint Denis is the capital of the island and is located at the far north. With around 150,000 inhabitants, it’s the largest city in the French overseas territories.
You should plan around half a day to visit it.
This coastal city is full of cultural and historical treasures: museums, religious buildings, green spaces, monuments and period buildings.
In just a few hours, you can explore its lively streets, colorful markets and iconic landmarks for a complete immersion in Reunion culture.
Here is a short list of the best places to see in Saint-Denis:
- Jardin de l’Etat, a lovely public botanical garden right in the city center
- Barachois, on the waterfront, known for its old cannons, and a great place for a walk. There is also a playground for children and often food trucks.
- Rue de Paris, where you can admire beautiful traditional Creole houses
- Musée Léon Dierx to discover modern art from the 19th and 20th centuries
- Saint-Sauveur Cathedral, the only cathedral on the island
- Noor-e-Islam Mosque, the oldest mosque in France
- Temple Kali Kampal, a beautiful and very colorful Hindu temple
- Artothèque, perfect if you love contemporary art

22. Saint-Leu
Here’s another must-visit place in Reunion: Saint Leu, a charming coastal town known for its beaches and surfing spots.

23. Le souffleur de Saint Leu
In Saint-Leu, there is also a natural curiosity that is one of the best things to see in Reunion Island: le Souffleur!
Le Souffleur de Saint-Leu is a geological formation on a cliff above the sea, creating a really impressive phenomenon.
Waves rush into a natural tunnel formed in the rock, then shoot out through a small opening in a powerful roaring jet of water that rises to several meters high.
The jet is even stronger when it’s windy and the sea is rough.
It’s a fascinating show you shouldn’t miss during your trip in west coast of the island.
Le Souffleur effect is even more beautiful to see at sunset, with the shimmering colors of the sky in the background. If you can go at the end of the day, that’s what you should do!

24. Hell Bourg
You can’t explore Reunion island without stopping in Hell-Bourg!
Listed among the most beautiful villages in France, Hell-Bourg is located in Salazie cirque.
This small picturesque village nestled in the mountains offers traditional Creole architecture, lush gardens and easy access to the surrounding hiking trails.
Once famous for its thermal baths, Hell-Bourg still preserves a rich heritage with emblematic sites such as Maison Folio and the slave cemetery.
Take time to stroll through the cobbled streets, admire the Creole houses and soak up the authentic atmosphere.
The hiking trails around the village offer breathtaking viewpoints, making it a must-visit if you love nature and Réunion culture.
When you go to Salazie, you will for sure stop in Hell Bourg!

25. Le Cap Méchant
Visiting Réunion Island also means discovering raw, wild nature, and the Cap Méchant site perfectly illustrates this aspect.
It’s the ideal place to witness the power of nature and enjoy breathtaking views.
Located at the southeastern tip of the island, Cap Méchant gets its name from the powerful waves of the Indian Ocean that crash violently against the black basalt cliffs.
Cap Méchant is surrounded by dense vegetation. The contrast is striking between the darkness of the volcanic rock and the bright green of the filaos and vacoas trees.
You can stroll along the well-maintained trails that wind through this unique landscape. The walk is dotted with spectacular viewpoints over the raging ocean.
Cap Méchant is also a place steeped in legends: it is said that the spirits of lost sailors still haunt its tumultuous waters.
Whether for a walk, a picnic, or simply to admire the majesty of the elements, I highly recommend making a stop at Cap Méchant when you’re in the south!

26. Anse des cascades
Anse des Cascades is another great place to see in Reunion.
This small picturesque bay is located on the east coast of the island, in Sainte Rose commune.
The special feature of Anse des Cascades is its many small waterfalls that tumble down cliffs and join the stream flowing into the ocean.
Between ocean and lush nature, it’s a peaceful place very popular with locals and visitors.
When you come to Anse des Cascades, you can:
- admire the many waterfalls, beautiful coconut grove and numerous vacoas
- eat at the restaurant on-site (open for more than 40 years!)
- have a picnic in the designated areas
- walk along the coastline
You can, for example, follow Sentier des Pêcheurs, a well-maintained trail that leads to the Sainte Rose port. Plan about 3 hours of walking (12 km).
Along the way, you will enjoy many viewpoints over the wild, wind-swept coast.

27. Stella Matutina Museum
Here is a great idea of thing to do in Reunion when it rains!

If you want to learn more about history and culture of the island, this is definitely a must-visit.
The museum is set inside a former sugar factory and covers 3,700 m².
Exhibitions are organized around historical objects, reconstructions, educational videos, old machines from that time and many other things.
It’s a very pleasant visit to do with family, with several fun presentations that really manage to capture children’s attention.
You will find more info on the museum’s official website right here.
28. Saint-Pierre
Saint-Pierre is a pretty town located in the south of the island and it’s really worth spending a full day there.
In addition to its typical Creole colonial architecture and many buildings to admire, Saturday morning market also promises a great time.
Best things to see in Saint Pierre, on Reunion Island:
- Downtown area with its typical colonial architecture

29. Helicopter flight over Reunion island
If you want to make your stay in Reunion truly unforgettable, a helicopter flight over the island is a must-do!
It’s one of the most popular activities on the island, and for good reason: if Reunion nature is already impressive from below, it’s even more spectacular from the sky!
So if you feel like going on an adventure, you should opt for these 2 helicopter tours operated by Mafate Helicoptères.
You can choose between:
This helicopter tour in Réunion is a 45-minute flight that takes you above the cirques of Mafate, Salazie and Cilaos. You will also fly over Piton des Neiges, Bélouve forest and Piton de la Fournaise.
Among the strong points of this tour, the descent into Trou de Fer canyon is really incredible!
In just 45 minutes, you get a beautiful overview of all Réunion highlights.
The helicopter can take up to 6 people and you can choose between a shared flight or a private flight.
Don’t wait to book your helicopter flight over the 3 cirques and volcanoes of Réunion by clicking below:
This second option offers a completely different perspective of the island, combining a helicopter flight and a gourmet stop in the mountains!
For half a day, you will fly over the most beautiful waterfalls of Réunion before landing in a small typical village hidden in the mountains. This village is only accessible by helicopter or on foot! You will enjoy a delicious Creole lunch in a guesthouse.
You will then take off again to admire Grand-Bassin waterfall from above and finish with a flight over Saint-Pierre lagoon.
You need to book this half-day helicopter adventure by clicking on the button below (you should really book as early as possible as flights are quickly fully booked!):

30. Entre-Deux Village
Nestled between 2 arms of Saint-Etienne river, Entre-Deux village needs to be on your list of best places to visit in Reunion Island.
This peaceful village of 7,000 inhabitants located in the south of the island really looks like a postcard, with its typical Creole houses and flower-filled gardens.
It is overlooked by Dimitile massif, known for its impressive jagged ridge line.
Best things to see during your visit to Entre-Deux village:
- beautiful colorful Creole houses in city center

You will also find beautiful walks starting from Entre-Deux, especially Arche de la Plaine hike which follows Bras de la Plaine riverbed.
If you love sports, Entre-Deux is also a stop or starting point for more challenging hikes, especially to reach Dimitile summit.
When you arrive, you should go to tourist information office. There, you can get a map of the itinerary that allows you to visit the village without missing any of its prettiest corners. Guided tours are also offered.

31. Grand Bassin
Not far from Entre-Deux, a bit further north, Grand Bassin is an isolated îlet nestled in mountains and surrounded by cliffs. This place is one of the wonders you should visit in Reunion Island.
The place looks like a mini-cirque, with a picturesque village and a green valley inside.
Grand Bassin îlet is not accessible by any road. There are only 2 ways to get there:
- on foot, following Mollaret trail, which is 4.5 km long (it goes downhill, so you should really do it in dry weather) and starts here (Google Map point).
- by helicopter (especially during this half-day excursion).
Grand Bassin is especially famous for its magnificent waterfall located below the village. It is nicknamed Voile de la Mariée waterfall (not to be confused with the one in Salazie).
You will enjoy several beautiful viewpoints over the waterfall and its pool from the trail descending to the îlet.
Several guesthouses allow you to spend the night in the valley near the waterfall, for a fully immersive experience in nature.

Car Rental in Réunion
To visit Réunion island, you really need a car.
It’s the only way to explore the island fully and really enjoy your trip, without wasting time and without depending on buses or taxis.
You should avoid small independent rental companies, to avoid scams and unclear insurance conditions (I already had to deal with this kind of problem and it can totally ruin your vacation…).
The best way to get the best price and the best safety for your rental car is to book through Discover Cars.
For me, it’s the best comparison site and I use it every time I travel.
With Discover Cars you’re sure to:
- easily compare prices of all rental car offers in Réunion
- get full protection insurance
- be refunded quickly in case of problem
- cancel your booking for free until the last moment.
They are really very reliable, always available and their service is excellent. On top of that, if you find cheaper elsewhere, they refund the difference!
