Zipline in Mauritius | La Vallée des Couleurs Nature Park

Did you know that the third longest zipline in the world is found in Mauritius?

It’s also the longest zipline in the Indian Ocean and is located more precisely in the southern part of the island, in the heart of the breathtaking La Vallée des Couleurs Nature Park.

So if you’re looking for a thrill during your trip to Mauritius, you definitely need to spend a day there!

In addition to the zipline, you can also test your courage on the longest suspension bridge in the Indian Ocean, cycle through the air, and embark on a quad biking adventure.

It’s safe to say that La Vallée des Couleurs Nature Park is the ultimate spot in Mauritius for an adrenaline rush!

And what’s more, all these attractions are harmoniously integrated into the park’s exceptional natural landscapes, between tropical forests, mountains, and waterfalls.

You’ll be taking in the spectacular views, as well as testing your limits and having fun!

In this article, I’m going to talk about my personal experience at La Vallée des Couleurs Nature Park, where I was lucky enough to try all the activities.

Having dreamed of ziplining in Mauritius and pushing my boundaries, I got what I wished for! And I had an incredible adventure day that I can’t wait to share with you!

Let’s go!

La Vallée des Couleurs Nature Park – Overview

La Vallée des Couleurs Nature Park (abbreviated LVDC) is located in the south of Mauritius, more specifically in Chamouny, about 15 km from Chamarel.

Spreading across 150 hectares, it is renowned as the greenest adventure and nature park in Mauritius.

A Sanctuary for Nature…

La Vallée des Couleurs Nature Park is home to a variety of plants and endemic animals within a verdant valley.

The park is, in particular, a sanctuary for the Mauritius Olive White Eye, a small bird indigenous to Mauritius that is critically endangered. A symbol of the island’s unique biodiversity, this bird is part of a conservation program and can be spotted in the park’s forest, although it is quite elusive.

Among the endemic plants you can encounter at LVDC are the Black Ebony (the famous ebony wood), Bois de Natte, and Bois d’Olivier.

Another feature of LVDC in Mauritius is the presence of numerous animals roaming freely in the valley and the surrounding hills, including families of deer, peacocks, and tortoises.

LVDC is also home to several albino deer. Unique to Mauritius, they are recognized by their pristine white coats and pink eyes.

The park is also known for its significant geological curiosity (from which it gets its name): a vast expanse of volcanic sand displaying no less than 23 shades of color!

This exceptional geological formation was created following the eruption of Bassin Blanc volcano, at the foot of which lies the La Vallée des Couleurs site.

The accumulated volcanic ash has created these 23 shades of color that can’t be found anywhere else.

…And a Hub of Adventures!

In addition to showcasing and preserving the Mauritian nature, La Vallée des Couleurs Nature Park is also a destination for adventurers.

The park offers unique activities in the Indian Ocean, such as:

  • the Signature Zipline (1.5 km), the longest in the Indian Ocean (and the 3rd longest in the world!)
  • the Nepalese Bridge, offering a 350m crossing above the void
  • the Bike Zipline, allowing you to pedal through the air for 400m
  • the Mountain Luge, an eco-friendly activity, where you speed down the track using gravity.

The park also has quad and buggy tracks, as well as hiking trails.

What I particularly appreciate about this park is the perfect harmony created between nature and adventure.

The various activities are intelligently integrated into the greenery of the park without harming it.

LVDC is therefore a must-visit destination for both nature lovers and thrill-seekers.

An Exceptional Restaurant

At La Vallée des Couleurs, you can dine at Chamouzé, a stunning restaurant set right in front of a waterfall.

The setting is truly beautiful, with a covered wooden terrace perched on stilts, offering a direct view of the waterfall just meters away.

My Advice

Here’s a great tip: start with the zipline course late in the morning and finish with the waterfall zipline, which arrives right at the entrance to the restaurant.

That’s what I did during my visit. Fresh from the zipline, it was lunchtime, and we got to settle down on the terrace for a delicious meal (for me, a hamburger, smoothie, and roasted pineapple!), before heading off for more activities!

Now that I’ve given you an overview of the park, it’s time to delve into the exceptional activities I was lucky enough to experience there!

The Longest Zipline in Mauritius… and the Indian Ocean!

Let’s start with the craziest experience you can have at LVDC: the 1.5km zipline!

This giant zipline is the longest in the Indian Ocean, and also the 3rd longest in the world.

I started with it right when I arrived at the park in the morning, and let me tell you, it really set the tone for a fun-filled day!

Once outfitted with our harnesses and helmets, we were driven to the starting point in a 4×4. There, we were faced with a plunging view of the immense cable that we were about to zoom down, stretching to another hill 1.5km away!

A truly vertigo-inducing sight!

I admit, at that moment, I did think, “Am I really going to do this?!” But thankfully, the temptation was stronger than the fear. So I didn’t hesitate to leap, and it was an incredible experience!

Approximately 2 minutes of descent above the void, 2 minutes outside of time, with a breathtaking view of the valley and the southwest coast.

Here we are on the longest zipline in the Indian Ocean!

This zipline can be done in pairs, as there are two parallel cables next to each other. This allows you to “fly” side by side with someone else!

Oh yes, I forgot to mention: the giant zipline is taken on in a … prone position, lying on your stomach! This way, your body is more aerodynamic, and it also gives you the feeling of gliding like a bird (or like Superman)!

It’s an experience you absolutely must try during your stay in Mauritius and I recommend it to you 2000%.

Don’t wait, book your 1.5km long Signature Zipline at Vallée des Couleurs by clicking the link below:

The Waterfall Zipline

Want to impress everyone? How about getting a photo taken with your hair blowing in the wind on a zipline with a waterfall in the background?

This is what the Waterfall Zipline offers, another unique zipline experience in Mauritius, available at Vallée des Couleurs.

It allows you to fly over the pool of the Chamouzé waterfall and land on the summit of the waterfall.

The journey ends right in front of the Le Chamouzé restaurant. Afterwards, you can either continue on your adventure or stop for a bite before heading out again!

It’s one of the most beautiful ziplines to try in Mauritius and you can already book your spot by clicking the button below:

The Zipline Courses

Vallée des Couleurs boasts no less than 5.5km of zipline lines and it’s possible to tackle them all in one go to explore the park in true Tarzan style!

So, if you’re not afraid of taking the leap, the most interesting thing to do is to opt for a course that takes you through Vallée des Couleurs by connecting up to 13 consecutive ziplines.

You’ll fly over the endemic forest, the land of 23 colors, the hills, and even waterfalls, on lines of different lengths and with varying speeds.

Some lines are rather gentle, and others will truly blow your hair back!

Vallée des Couleurs offers several different courses, suitable for children from the age of 4 (click on the orange links to book the course of your choice):

My Advice

To ensure the safety of visitors on the zipline lines, weight limits are imposed:

  • For the regular zip lines (excluding the Signature zip line):
    • Minimum weight: 15kg
    • Maximum weight: 120kg
  • For the Signature zip line:
    • Minimum weight: 40kg
    • Maximum weight: 120kg

Please note that for those weighing between 80 and 150kg, it is possible to do the Signature zip line in a seated harness, rather than lying down.

My Advice

If you have never tried zip lining and are a bit nervous about it, my advice is to start with the beginner’s zip line, which is designed for beginners. You will descend on a 500m line in a seated position at a moderate speed, passing over a lake and the forest.

This will allow you to test the sensation and see if you would like to continue with more thrilling lines!

Bike Zipline in Mauritius

Here’s a bizarre and original activity to try at Vallée des Couleurs Nature Park: the bike zipline! (You’ll wonder who came up with this crazy idea).

Yes, it exists, and it’s an absolute must-try for a burst of adrenaline!

The Bicycle Zipline involves mounting a bike and pedaling on a cable above the void, covering 200m there and 200m back!

The bike is attached at the top and bottom to cables, and the person is also secured to the upper cable with a harness. The bike wheel is hollow to interlock and follow the lower line as it moves.

However, when you are on it and look at your feet, you can’t see the line under the wheel and it feels like you’re really pedaling in the air, like E.T.!

This is how I felt on the Bicycle Zipline!

The line is suspended 18m above the ground. It notably passes over a small lake and the round-trip covers 400m.

It’s a truly surprising and fun experience, which personally delighted me. I felt as if I was pedaling in the sky—it was magical.

The Vallée des Couleurs Bicycle Zipline is accessible to children from 12 years old (1m35 and 35kg minimum).

With 4 parallel cables, up to 4 people can go at the same time. If you’re with your family in Mauritius, it’s a great way to share the experience and create an amazing memory!

Nepalese Bridge in Mauritius

Let’s continue with the thrill-seeking adventures at Vallée des Couleurs Nature Park with another must-try attraction: the Nepalese Bridge!

And it’s not just any bridge! In fact, it’s the longest suspension bridge in the Indian Ocean.

It was the last activity I did that day, and it was definitely the one that gave me the most chills!

This unique bridge in Mauritius is 350m long and comes in two versions: there are two parallel bridges, offering you a choice between an “accessible” level and an “adrenaline +++” level!

The first bridge labeled “easy” is made of metal, slightly broader than the second, and less shaky.

The second labeled “difficult”” is made of wood, consisting of just a narrow single plank for a walking surface, and it moves a lot more!

I personally opted for the first one, the metal bridge. Even though it’s supposedly easy, I can assure you that the adrenaline was indeed there! Especially at midway when I felt the vibrations of the bridge and the sheer drop beneath my feet!

Throughout the journey, you are of course strapped in with a harness to a safety cable. Two lines on each side of the bridge help you hold on to move forward and maintain balance.

The maximum safety is ensured, there is no risk involved, but the pervasive emptiness around provides intense thrills!

If you suffer from vertigo, you might as well not even think about it!

The bridge is suspended 100m high above the canopy. It was tough for me to look down for long, but the view is absolutely breathtaking! You are literally above the lush tropical forest, where you can spot rivers and waterfalls at certain points.

The crossing takes about 15 minutes, but it all depends on how fast you move.

Guides are stationed at both the start and the finish to ensure your safety and the smooth progression of the crossing.

My Advice

Occasionally, some people paralyzed by the void are unable to move and remain stuck in the middle of the bridge. In these cases, the guides intervene quickly, come to join the person and accompany them to the end.

For me, it was an amazing challenge and I totally recommend it if you want to test your limits and have a true adventure!

(I haven’t yet tried the wooden bridge, which is even more vertigo-inducing, but I am certainly planning to do it next time! ^^)

Other Activities at Vallée des Couleurs Nature Park

In addition to the zipline and suspension bridges, Vallée des Couleurs Nature Park offers other activities for the adventurous at heart: quad biking, buggy driving, mountain sledding, an exclusive 4×4 tour, and hiking.

Quad and Buggy in LVDC, Mauritius

If you want to go on a buggy or quad adventure in Mauritius, the Vallée des Couleurs Nature Park offers 2 routes to explore the surrounding nature on four wheels, among hills, forests, and waterfalls.

I personally took the Quad Adventure route. Lasting about 1 hour, it goes through the forest, past a waterfall and up to the Kazmael viewpoint which offers a stunning panorama of the entire southwest coast.

Whichever route you choose, you will start with a short safety briefing before warming up for a few minutes on a small training course.

Then, the adventure begins, accompanied by your guide.

For quad bikings at LVDC in Mauritius, you have the choice between:

1. The Adventure route:

Lasting 1 hour, it’s perfect for you if you like speed and adrenaline. You will travel on various types of terrain, from rocky tracks to muddy trails, through the edge of forests and up high altitudes. You will notably stop in the heart of the forest to discover the Angel Hair Waterfall, where you can take a break for photos and even have a swim!

2. The Discovery route:

This circuit also lasts 1 hour but it’s more relaxed. You will ride on smooth and less rugged tracks, all while discovering beautiful vistas of the valley, the land of 23 colors, stopping near waterfalls, and brushing past the tropical forest. Choose this route if you want a calm and easy quad biking experience.

Book your Discovery quad route at the Valley of Colors now by clicking right here.

My Advice

For the more adventurous, you can combine the 2 routes and book the complete Discovery+Adventure route, lasting a total of 2 hours!

To book your quad for the complete route, click on the button below and choose the option “Discovery + adventure route 2 hours”:

And if you prefer buggy riding, you’re in for 1 hour of guided adventure aboard a 600cc machine for the maximum thrill!

Mountain Luge

Another thrilling activity to do in LVDC in Mauritius: the 3-wheeled luge!

Also known as “karting ludge“, it is a unique activity in Mauritius.

The Vallée des Couleurs nature park is the first in the world to have introduced this activity!

Essentially, the mountain luge is a small 3-wheeled vehicle propelled solely by the force of gravity. You sit with legs stretched out like in a kart, ready to zoom down the 700m track!

There are obstacles and turns along the way to make the ride even more exhilarating.

It’s an eco-friendly, super fun activity that’s suitable for all ages (minimum height: 1.1m).

The Dream Trip: Private 4×4 Excursion

The Vallée des Couleurs also invites you to discover its natural park on an exclusive 4×4 tour!

The vehicle, which can accommodate up to 4 people, takes you to explore the most beautiful corners of the park, including a visit to its highest point at the summit of Piton Savanne.

From there, you’ll enjoy a breathtaking view over the entire southern coast of Mauritius: from Mahebourg and Blue Bay in the east, to Bel Ombre in the west, passing through Souillac.

A lovely wooden platform offers a spot to pause and admire the scenery before continuing on.

Your guide will also lead you through various wild spots in the park, inhabited by the endemic birds and other animals you can observe in their natural habitat. Not to mention the waterfalls and rivers you’ll encounter along the way.

The Dream Trip is therefore a wonderful adventure for families in Mauritius, ready for booking by clicking below:

Hiking

If ziplining in Mauritius, quad biking, or 4×4 touring doesn’t appeal to you much and you prefer exploring the park on foot, that’s totally doable!

There are hiking trails with several informative signs arranged throughout the valley, hills, and forest of the park.

The walk takes about 1h30-2h depending on your walking pace.

You’ll have the opportunity to leisurely discover the various endemic trees along the trail, encounter free-roaming animals, get up close with the land of 23 colors, climb to the Kazmaël viewpoint, and marvel at the Vacoas and Chamouzé waterfalls.

To enjoy hiking at Vallée des Couleurs you just need to pay the park entrance fee (10€/person).

To save time you can purchase your ticket online by clicking here directly.

Travel Insurance for Mauritius: My Advice

My Advice

Many travelers wrongly believe that healthcare in Mauritius is affordable and that they don’t need travel insurance. But in reality, the public health system is fragile and even the slightest consultation at a private clinic can be very expensive!

This is why it is essential to have travel insurance with a good medical coverage before you leave.

For your safety during your trip, I recommend the following two insurance options (both include epidemic coverage – like Covid-19 -, which is very important!)
