Mauritius travel cost: Practical Guide

Dreaming of a trip to Mauritius and want to know how much budget to plan for this journey?

You’re in the right place!

To calculate an overall budget for your trip to Mauritius, you’ll need to take into account several factors:

  • the flight ticket
  • accommodation
  • transportation (car rental, taxis, or buses)
  • sightseeing and activities
  • food and fuel.

The cost of your stay in Mauritius can vary greatly depending on the type of accommodation (luxury hotel, B&B, eco-lodge, vacation rental…), your dining choices (restaurants, quick meals…), and the time of year you choose to visit.

All these things need to be considered to establish the most accurate travel budget possible.

To help you, I’ve prepared a concrete estimation of average rates for all these services below, along with my tips and tricks to get the best prices.

So, what budget do you need to visit Mauritius?

Let’s find out right now!

1. Flight Budget for Mauritius

To get to Mauritius, a small island in the Indian Ocean, taking a flight is obviously unavoidable.

If you are traveling from France, direct flights are available from Paris Charles-de-Gaulle or Orly airports.

Several airlines offer flights from Paris to Mauritius such as Air France, Air Mauritius, Corsair, and Air Austral.

Please note that Corsair and Air Austral usually make a short stopover at Reunion Island before landing in Mauritius.

For a direct flight with no stopovers, the journey takes about 11 hours between France and Mauritius.

Regarding the price of flight tickets to Mauritius, they vary quite a bit from season to season. However, the average price ranges around 1000€ per person.

Prices can also fluctuate depending on how far in advance you book. Of course, the earlier you book, the better the deals!

To get the best fares, I recommend booking your plane tickets at least 4 to 5 months in advance.

It’s also worth noting that flight prices are higher during the July-August and December holiday periods.

To calculate your flight budget for Mauritius, the easiest way is to use the button below to easily compare prices:

2. Car Rental in Mauritius: Rates

To visit Mauritius in the best conditions, I recommend renting a car locally.

This is indeed the only way to be truly free to move around and to go wherever you want, without relying on taxis or buses.

My Advice

The bus network in Mauritius is really very slow. Plus, it does not cover the whole island. Although it is the most economical method of transportation, I do not recommend relying on buses unless you plan to stay at your hotel and travel only in the vicinity of your accommodation.

The budget for car rental in Mauritius varies depending on the type of car you want and the rental company. There may also be price differences based on the season.

For a small 4-seat car, expect about 250€ for a week’s rental.

For your car rental in Mauritius, I advise you to go through Booking Cars.

I use them for all my travels and they really offer lots of benefits.

I choose them mainly for four reasons:

  • Quick and easy comparison of car rental rates in Mauritius, with customer reviews
  • Comprehensive insurance protection, super effective for getting reimbursed in case of damage or theft
  • Free modification or cancellation of your reservation
  • Best Price Guarantee: if you find a cheaper equivalent offer elsewhere, Booking Cars will refund the difference!

It’s truly the best way to enjoy unbeatable prices while traveling stress-free!

3. Accommodation Budget: How much does a hotel cost in Mauritius?

As with everything, the rates for accommodation in Mauritius can vary widely, sometimes by two or three times or even four, depending on:

  • the time of year
  • the category of the hotel
  • the location
  • how far in advance you book.

Of course, rates are highest during the peak tourist season, which occurs in the southern summer, from October to May.

To give you an example:

To help you find the perfect accommodation and to calculate your hotel budget in Mauritius, I’ve prepared a detailed article about the island’s best lodgings, in each region: North Coast, West Coast, East and South.

4. What budget for activities in Mauritius?

Are you eager to fit in several visits to cities, villages, or to natural and historical sites during your vacation in Mauritius?

And you’re wondering about the prices of activities in Mauritius?

The good news is that most places of interest in Mauritius can be visited for free.

The beaches, national parks like the Black River Gorges, sacred sites such as Grand Bassin, as well as coastal cities like Grand Baie and historically rich towns like Mahébourg and Port-Louis, the capital, can all be freely explored.

Of course, it’s also possible to choose paid guided tours. The advantage is that you get to be accompanied by a local guide who teaches you a lot about the culture and history of the places, and who shows you secret spots and great local tips you wouldn’t find on your own.

The most interesting ones are:

  • The guided tour of Port-Louis: 40€ per person
  • The Grand Baie tour: 60€ per person
  • And the Mahébourg tour (the first-built city in Mauritius): 54€ per person

There are also some natural and cultural sites that have an entrance fee but the prices are quite fair, at about 10€ for adults. Among the must-visit, admission-paid sites we can mention:

  • The Pamplemousses Botanical Garden – Around 5€ entry fee (+ 2€ for guided tour)
  • The Seven Coloured Earths of Chamarel – 10€ per person (includes access to the island’s highest waterfall)
  • The Ferney Valley – 8€ entry fee
  • The Eurêka Creole House – 8€ per person
  • The Château de Labourdonnais15€ entrance (includes a tasting of rums, juices, and fruit jams made on-site)
  • Île aux Aigrettes – 20€ per person for a 2-hour guided tour of the nature reserve, including round-trip boat transfer

Eating in Mauritius: The Food Budget

Wonder how much is an average meal in Mauritius?

It’s good to know that in Mauritius you can eat for very cheap if you dine like a local.

Street food is incredibly popular here and very affordable. You’ll find vendors selling faratas, rotis, dhal puri, minn frir, minn bwi and other Mauritian street-food on every corner (and it’s delicious… though a bit greasy!)

So if you want to save money on your Mauritius travel budget, you can always opt for quick meals.

Count on spending between 1 and 3€ per person for this kind of street food dish.

My Advice

A roti or farata is a sort of savory pancake, similar to an Indian naan, and filled with various curries. Typically large beans, rougail (tomato sauce) and one or more vegetable, meat or fish curries.

The same goes for dhal puri, except it’s a “pancake” made with split peas.

Essentially, it’s a complete meal that costs almost nothing (about 20 rupees, or 0.50€), it’s super tasty and quite filling!

(Generally, you would grab 2 faratas or 2 dhal puri to feel satisfied).

During your stay, you can also indulge in some restaurant meals. That’s an additional cost to consider in your Mauritius travel budget.

Generally, restaurant prices in Mauritius vary widely depending on the area.

In tourist areas, especially seaside locations, prices are highest and comparable to those of a French city.

However, they are still very reasonable compared to other countries.

For the most upscale restaurants (outside the luxury hotels), expect to pay around 40€ per person for a starter-main-dessert menu.

In more popular restaurants, you can have the same menu for between 15 and 20€ per person.

You can also opt for snacks offering steam dumplings, briyani, fried rice or other Mauritian specialties, for less than 10€ per person.

To estimate your Mauritius restaurant budget, you need to consider where you choose to eat and how many restaurants you plan to visit.

And to save on food expenses during your vacation, you can alternate by going to restaurants in the evening and having quick bites at lunchtime.
