Let’s go!

Is Mauritius a good place for a family holiday?

Yes!

For me, the answer is as simple and clear as that 🙂

Mauritius is indeed well-suited for a family trip, for several reasons:

  • Sunny climate all year round: for a mood boost and plenty of vitamin D!
  • Minimal time difference: just +2 hours in summer and +3 hours in winter compared to Europe.
  • A variety of activities: whether you love idyllic beaches, water sports, hiking in nature, or cultural visits, there’s something for everyone and all ages.
  • A melting pot of cultures – African, Indian, and European: a fantastic lesson in tolerance and coexistence for kids.
  • The kindness of Mauritians: here, you’re guaranteed a warm welcome and helpful assistance when needed. The benevolence of Mauritians is legendary.
  • Safety first: The island is known for its tranquility and low crime rate, so you can explore with peace of mind.
  • Kid-friendly accommodations: There are numerous hotels specially designed for families, with facilities and services that cater to younger guests.

To top it off, the mild Mauritian climate allows you to travel light. Summer outfits are all that’s needed, which means easier suitcase management and less laundry!

Whether you’re traveling to Mauritius with a baby or older children, it’s a perfect destination for a stress-free family holiday. So go for it! 🙂

Best Family Attractions in Mauritius

To help you plan your holiday itinerary with your kids in Mauritius, let’s start by listing the coolest places to explore as a family:

1. The Wonders of Chamarel

Chamarel is a picturesque little village nestled in the heights of the southwest part of the country. The village itself, surrounded by jungle and mountains, is quite charming.

And it is home to several iconic places that are a must-see during your family trip to Mauritius.

The Land of 7 Colours, the Turtles, and the Waterfall

It’s one of the most famous spots in Mauritius, and an incredible natural curiosity that both kids and adults will marvel at!

The Seven Coloured Earth of Chamarel is located within a private domain, the Chamarel Geopark.

It’s a unique site where you will be able to discover an area of multicolored volcanic soil.

The phenomenon is 100% natural, with shades of color ranging from purple to ochre, red, blue, and even green.

This “rainbow land” is due to the high concentration of iron and aluminum in the volcanic soil.

Opposite the site, a beautiful terrace and a small restaurant offer the chance to enjoy some Mauritian snacks against a spectacular backdrop. A little souvenir shop also allows you to buy pretty Mauritian handicrafts as well as coffee produced on the domain (the famous Chamarel coffee).

Just next to the Seven Coloured Earth, you will find a turtle park, hosting several giant tortoises which you can admire up close. Kids, of course, love it!

A few meters from the Seven Coloured Earth, don’t miss one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Mauritius: the Chamarel waterfall.

It plunges from a height of 100 meters, making it the highest waterfall on the island. It is truly magnificent!

The entrance ticket to the Geopark includes: the Seven Coloured Earth + the turtle park + the waterfall.

The price: 11€ per person, 5€ per child up to 11 years old, free for children under 4 years old.

To save time, you can already purchase your ticket by clicking the button below:

Ebony Forest Reserve

Before or after your visit to the Seven Coloured Earth, don’t miss the opportunity to check out the Ebony Forest, which is less than a 5-minute drive away.

This forest nature reserve invites you for an enjoyable walk through the tropical woods. The mission here is the restoration of the ebony forest, which was destroyed in the 18th century for the ebony wood trade.

At the start of the trail, a well done little museum explains and summarizes the history of Mauritius from its volcanic formation to the arrival of the first colonists (and I, who am not a huge fan of museums, really like this one!).

You can then follow the trail that goes up through the forest. Plan about 2 hours round trip to reach the splendid reserve’s viewpoints: Sublime Point.

Its name is fitting since it offers a breathtaking view over the entire southwest coast. Comfortable seating and a small snack bar allow you to enjoy the landscape while sipping a drink and trying some Mauritian specialties.

For hiking enthusiasts, it’s possible to extend the adventure to Piton Canot, which adds approximately 1 hour of walking. From up there, the reward is even more stunning, with an incredible 360° view!

Keep in mind that guided tours are also offered; check at the reception for more details.

My Advice

If you visit Ebony Forest with younger children, I recommend you stop at Sublime Point. The climb to Piton Canot is quite strenuous and can be slippery in places, making it less suitable for kids.

Reaching Sublime Point is already an extraordinary experience, ideal for a family visit to Mauritius.

The Curious Corner

If you’re visiting Mauritius with your family, don’t leave Chamarel without checking out The Curious Corner, the optical illusion museum!

It’s located right across from the entrance of the Geopark, so you can’t miss it.

Inside, you’ll find a series of interactive rooms with trompe-l’œil and other confusing illusions.

Imagine walking on the ceiling in the ‘Upside Down’ room, getting lost in the mirror maze, or suddenly becoming a giant or a lilliputian.

Each room is an invitation to play with perception and capture some unique and fun photos.

This super original museum promises a memorable time with your children. If you’re looking for a fun outing for the family during your stay in Mauritius, I highly recommend it!

My Advice

Find even more things to see in Chamarel and its surroundings, places to eat, and where to stay in the area in my dedicated article: What to do and see in Chamarel?

2. Île aux Cerfs

For a fantastic boat and beach day in Mauritius with your kids, head over to Île aux Cerfs!

Île aux Cerfs is one of Mauritius’s most famous spots. This paradisiacal islet is located off the east coast.

During your family trip to Mauritius, plan for half a day or a full day on the islet to make the most of its idyllic setting right out of a postcard.

What you can expect:

  • a boat crossing through a translucent blue lagoon
  • pristine white sand upon arrival on the island
  • a calm turquoise sea
  • all kinds of water sports (parasailing, towed buoys, water-skiing, snorkeling, etc.)

You can also enjoy a lovely stroll along the sand or through the island’s interior.

My Advice

The best idea for your family day out at Île aux Cerfs is to plan for a picnic on the beach with your kids. Alternatively, there are several restaurants on the islet as well.

To get to Île aux Cerfs, you will naturally need to take a boat. There are shuttles that run the round trip starting at 9 AM from the beach or the pier at Trou d’Eau Douce.

Another option is to choose an organized cruise, where the whole family will be fully taken care of. You won’t need to worry about shuttle schedules or meals, everything is arranged!

This catamaran cruise to Île aux Cerfs is perfect if you’re visiting Mauritius with your family. You’ll embark at 9 AM and be led across the lagoon for a first stop at the Grande Rivière Sud-Est waterfall (one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Mauritius!)

The captain will then take you to an exceptional snorkeling spot, where you can jump into the water to observe the colorful fish with masks and snorkels (provided by the crew).

Next, head to Île aux Cerfs for a delicious barbecue lunch, followed by free time to explore the island or relax on the white sand.

The return is scheduled for around 3:30 PM.

Rates: 67€ per person, 34€ for children up to 11 years old, free for babies up to 2 years old.

3. Visiting Port-Louis

Are you looking for a cultural visit to enjoy with your family in Mauritius? You should definitely pay a visit to the capital, Port-Louis.

There are many things to see in this city, which boasts a rich cultural and historical heritage. For an outing with your children, here’s an itinerary idea:

Step 1: Le Caudan Waterfront

Start your day at Caudan, an open-air shopping center with a seaview.

It’s the oldest shopping center in Mauritius and it’s very pleasant to stroll around.

Things to see at Caudan Waterfront:

  • Umbrella Alley
  • The Craft Market
  • The waterfront
  • The numerous shops

My Advice

If you have rented a car (which I recommend for the freedom to move around at your own pace), you should park at the Caudan parking lot and continue the tour on foot.

It’s the most convenient option, as finding parking in the city center can be really challenging.

Step 2: The Central Market

Continue on foot to the Central Market, the large covered market of Port-Louis.

Here, get ready to dive into a world filled with vivid colors and enticing aromas.

Wander through the market’s ground floor corridors to admire countless local fruits and vegetables. You can also go upstairs to find spice stands and souvenir items.

The Central Market of Port-Louis is open every day from 5:30 am to 5:30 pm (except on Sunday when it closes at noon).

Step 3: China Town

Exit the market onto Queen Street and head to the vibrant China Town neighborhood.

Port-Louis’s China Town is like an open-air museum, where street art adds color to the streets and tells stories.

Children, in particular, will love this part of the tour, as they embark on a treasure hunt for artistic gems scattered throughout the area.

Don’t miss the small Venpin Street (Venpin), whose walls are fully adorned with beautiful artworks dedicated to the world of manga.

And if you’re wondering where to eat in China Town, Port-Louis, I recommend the small restaurant Mr Bao, offering delicious Chinese steamed buns (personally, I love them!).

My Advice

Here’s a fun game you can play with your children to make your stroll around Port-Louis more exciting:

Explore China Town to find all of the following:

  • Totoro holding an umbrella
  • The green monster in captivity
  • The orange and pink Buddha
  • The blue dodo wearing a hat
  • Kung Fu Panda
  • Bruce Lee
  • The school of manta rays
  • The dolphin
  • The 3D fox jumping on a can

Happy treasure hunting!

Step 4: The House of Digital Art

To conclude your visit to Port-Louis, I suggest a very recent museum dedicated to digital art.

It’s located in the city center, about a 10-minute walk from Caudan.

Here, you’ll find temporary exhibitions combining digital art, street art, augmented reality, and immersive experiences.

An experience that is as much a hit with adults as it is with kids!

Admission tickets can be purchased directly at the ticket counter, or in advance online via themuseum’s official website.

Step 5: Return to Caudan for a Snack

Head back to Caudan to pick up your car, and why not grab a little snack before leaving the city.

Before you leave, you can also find some souvenirs at the Craft Market, the large market for local crafts in Port-Louis.

My Advice

I have also prepared a complete guide on Port-Louis, where I detail all the things to see and give you my best tips. Do not hesitate to read it to prepare your visit: What to do and see in Port-Louis, Mauritius?

4. The Pamplemousses Botanical Garden

If you have some time left after visiting Port-Louis, you can continue your day at the Pamplemousses Garden.

A must-visit in Mauritius, this botanical garden spanning 37 hectares dates back to the 18th century and was the first to be created in the Southern Hemisphere.

It invites you to discover an impressive collection of plants from all over the world.

You can especially see:

  • centennial baobabs (huge!)
  • talipots: a tree that flowers only once in its lifetime and produces the largest flower in the world!
  • the famous pond of giant water lilies, which can reach 3 meters in diameter!
  • a small garden dedicated to medicinal plants
  • another one dedicated to spices
  • and many other wonders.

Plan around 1 hour for the self-guided tour and 1.5 hours for the guided tour (which I recommend as it’s really interesting and fun, and it’s only 2€ extra per person).

The garden also houses enclosures with giant tortoises and deer (however, the animals are caged and not very well cared for, which is not my favorite part of the park…).

The entrance fee for Pamplemousses Garden is about 6€ per person, free for children under 5 years old.

My Advice

Another family excursion in Mauritius, to do in the area if your kids are not allergic to museums: the Labourdonnais Castle.

It’s a very beautiful colonial house to visit, with a large garden, orchards, and tastings of juice, fruit pastes (and rum for the parents!) produced on the estate.

The castle is located 20 minutes by car from Port-Louis, and 7 minutes from the Pamplemousses Garden.

5. Grand Bassin

During your family vacation in Mauritius, you should also plan to visit Grand Bassin, a famous and iconic site that is a must-see!

Grand Bassin, also known as Ganga Talao, is located in the south of the island, inland.

It’s a natural lake formed in an old volcanic crater, which became sacred in the 19th century. A Hindu priest reportedly had a vision showing the god Shiva filling the crater with water from the sacred Ganges River. The site was then named Ganga Talao (meaning “Lake of the Ganges”).

Ganga Talao, also known as Grand Bassin, has since become the emblem of Mauritian Hinduism. It’s an important place of pilgrimage and contemplation for religious Mauritians of Hindu origin.

You can wander freely to discover the temples and the colorful statues of the gods. The atmosphere is very particular here, spiritual and peaceful. You’ll often encounter monkeys as well!

You will also be impressed by the two huge statues guarding the entrance to the site, standing 30 meters tall, representing the gods Shiva and Durga. The statue of Durga is actually the largest statue of a female deity in the world!

To find out everything about Grand Bassin and organize your visit, I invite you to read my dedicated article: How to visit Grand Bassin?

My Advice

I recommend combining your visit to Grand Bassin with a trip to the Bois Chéri estate, located just 10 minutes away by car.

Bois Chéri is where the famous (and delicious!) Mauritian tea is produced.

The Bois Chéri estate features the tea production plant (which can only be visited in the morning), a small museum about the history of tea in Mauritius, and a beautiful estate where animals roam freely, with tea plantations as far as the eye can see.

The visit to Bois Chéri also includes a tasting of various Mauritian teas. There is also the option to have lunch in the restaurant overlooking the estate.

6. Île aux Bénitiers

Among the family-friendly activities in Mauritius, I also recommend visiting Île aux Bénitiers!

Like Île aux Cerfs, it’s a small uninhabited island with a paradisiacal setting, located this time in the southwest, just 500m off the coast.

You can spend a day on this excursion that includes a boat ride and a stopover on the island, where you can:

  • lounge on the white sand
  • swim in the crystal-clear ocean waters
  • go snorkeling
  • visit the small island market

To get to Île aux Bénitiers, you need to take a boat. Once again, there are cruises organized where everything is taken care of: round-trip transport, meals, and stops at the most beautiful snorkeling spots around the island!

If you’re interested, I recommend this catamaran excursion to Île aux Bénitiers which includes:

  • round-trip transport from your accommodation
  • an amazing snorkeling stop near the Crystal Rock (a natural wonder you must see!)
  • a chance to encounter wild dolphins (if they decide to show up, which they usually do)
  • a delicious beach barbecue lunch on Île aux Bénitiers
  • free time on the island for swimming, strolling, or sunbathing

Snorkeling gear is included as well as unlimited drinks.

Enjoy a fantastic day-long family cruise for only 85€/adult and 35€/child (free for children under 3 years old).

You should book your spots in advance as the boats fill up quickly. It’s very simple, just click on this button:

My Advice

I don’t have time to detail everything about Île aux Bénitiers in this article, but I have prepared a complete guide that you can read by clicking here: Visiting Île aux Bénitiers – Everything You Need to Know

7. The Sugar Museum

Another cultural visit to consider in Mauritius with kids is L’Aventure du Sucre, a museum dedivated to the cultivation of sugarcane in Mauritius.

The museum, L’Aventure du Sucre, is located in the north of the island, between Port-Louis and Grand Bay.

It’s set up in a former sugar factory and is very well designed, especially for children, providing a very fun and interactive approach.

The visit lasts about an hour and includes tasting different kinds of sugar at the end (the kids’ favorite part 😀 )

It’s also a great option if you’re wondering what to do in Mauritius when it rains!

Entrance fees: 15€ for adults ; 8€ for children ; free for those under 6 years old

8. Eureka Creole House

We conclude this list of family-friendly places to visit in Mauritius with the Eureka House, a magnificent Creole abode constructed in the 19th century.

Located in Moka, right in the heart of the island, it is a fascinating visit if you are interested in Mauritius’s historical aspect.

You can tour the house and its living spaces, arranged as they were back in 1830, complete with numerous authentic pieces of furniture and objects. I recommend opting for the guided tour, which is very informative about the house’s history and the lifestyle of that era.

Afterward, you are invited to freely explore the large garden, and you can follow the trail leading to four magnificent waterfalls.

The house’s large open terrace also welcomes visitors for lunch to enjoy a typical Creole meal, or just to have a drink.

Entrance fee: 8€ per person – free for children aged 0-10.

Top Family Activities to Do in Mauritius

Are your kids full of energy and can’t sit still?

In addition to must-see places, Mauritius is brimming with family activities that will captivate them while you share unforgettable moments together.

Here is my selection of the best sports and outdoor activities to try with your family in Mauritius.

1. Vallée des Couleurs Nature Park

If you are looking for THE leisure park not to be missed in Mauritius, this is the place!

La Vallée des Couleurs wonderfully combines breathtaking nature beauty with hair-raising activities.

Imagine an amusement park in the heart of a tropical landscape, where every adventure seamlessly blends with the surroundings.

Here you can zip-line over the forest, cross the longest suspension bridge in the Indian Ocean, go quad biking, mountain sledding, and even ride a bike in the air on a wire!

As far as parks and attractions for kids in Mauritius go, it’s the ultimate hotspot for budding adventurers, with activities suitable for children aged 4 and above.

A family day out at La Vallée des Couleurs during your stay in Mauritius is guaranteed to be packed with adrenaline and leave you with unforgettable memories.

2. Boat Trips

Sea excursions are certainly among the must-do activities with your children in Mauritius.

To help you choose, here are the most family-friendly boat trips in Mauritius:

Catamaran Cruises

The catamaran cruises in Mauritius allow you to show your children the beauty of the ocean while spending a relaxing family day out.

I especially recommend the cruise to Île aux Cerfs, departing from the East coast, which combines both sailing and a stopover on a paradisiacal island. I’ve mentioned it earlier, and you can book it right here.

If you are in the South, the cruise to Île aux Bénitiers is quite similar and also a fun experience. Plus, you might get a chance to encounter dolphins, which frequent this part of the lagoon. I’ve also talked about it earlier in the article. Don’t hesitate to book your spots in advance by clicking this link.

Lastly, I also suggest the full-day catamaran trip to the Northern islets, leaving from Grand Bay. It’s one of the most popular sea outings in Mauritius for families. The spots fill up fast, so don’t delay and book now by clicking on the button below:

For all three of these excursions, the teams are very attentive to children, ensuring great moments for the entire family.

Glass-bottom Boat Trip at Blue Bay

Here’s a super “chill” activity to do with your children in Mauritius, including with very young ones.

This excursion in a glass-bottom boat at the marine park of Blue Bay promises to be an eye-opener for the whole family.

You’ll set out in the morning aboard a “glass-bottom” boat, which means it has a transparent hull. This allows you to have a view of the marine life just beneath your feet, letting you observe everything happening down there without getting wet!

For those who do fancy a swim, your skipper will offer a little snorkeling and swimming break at the best spots in the lagoon. Blue Bay is truly a magical place in Mauritius for watching aquatic life (it’s my favorite snorkeling spot!).

Then, you’ll make a stopover at Île des 2 Cocos for a picnic of Mauritian specialties on the beach, carefully prepared by the crew, before heading back.

This excellent family activity in Mauritius can be booked directly via the button below:

Ile aux Aigrettes Excursion

Lastly, I also recommend visiting Ile aux Aigrettes, another tiny island nestled in the Southeast lagoon of Mauritius.

This quaint, round-shaped isle is a protected nature reserve home to numerous endemic species. Therefore, it’s only accessible with a guide and by reservation.

The guided tour includes:

  • departing from Pointe Jerome (near Mahébourg) on a small motorboat for about 10 minutes of crossing
  • arrival on Ile aux Aigrettes
  • a circa 1.5-hour tour of the island with the guide’s insights
    • discovering animal (like the Pink Pigeon, Telfair’s skink, the Black Fruit bat) and plant endemic species (such as the Blue Latan Palm, the Bois de Natte, and Black Ebony…)
    • meeting with the giant tortoises roaming freely on the islet (if they choose to show themselves)
  • access to the souvenir shop
  • return to Mahébourg

This family excursion in Mauritius offers a great opportunity to teach your children the importance of nature conservation.

Plus, by participating, you’ll be contributing to the conservation program led on the island by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation, which is partly funded by the visit fees.

You can book your guided tour of Ile aux Aigrettes right here.

3. Learn Kitesurfing as a Family

Looking for an original activity to enjoy as a family in Mauritius? Why not try kitesurfing together?

Kitesurfing is the national water sport and is especially popular in the southwest of the island near Morne Brabant.

With its crystalline lagoons, consistent winds, and shallow waters, Mauritius offers perfect conditions for both beginners and the more experienced.

Several kitesurfing schools provide child-friendly courses, featuring specific equipment and qualified instructors to ensure safe learning.

While beginners learn the ropes, the more skilled can hone their techniques or simply enjoy watching the action.

And if everyone is a beginner, what a perfect opportunity to learn together as a family!

If the idea of a kitesurfing initiation in Mauritius appeals to you, I recommend Le Morne Kite School, which offers discovery courses of 2 hours, as well as longer, more comprehensive courses.

4. Experience Your First Dive in Mauritius

Spending a family holiday in Mauritius can also be the perfect occasion for your first diving experience!

It’s truly the ideal setting for an initiation: with warm and clear waters, and a wealth of multi-colored fish to observe (not to mention the sea turtles and dolphins you’ll often spot!)

Doing it together as a family can be very reassuring and is guaranteed to create an unforgettable memory.

So, if you or your children are tempted, you can already book your first diving experiences via the links I’m providing below. These are renowned diving centers that I recommend for their professionalism:

Family-friendly Beaches in Mauritius

In Mauritius, family outings often mean beaches and swimming!

And in this little paradise, we’re lucky to enjoy a lagoon with turquoise and translucent waters, delightfully warmed by the sun.

So, you’re not going to miss out on some beach days with the family during your stay in Mauritius!

To help you plan, I have listed below the best Mauritian beaches for families, with shallow waters, a calm sea and a safe and comfortable setting for everyone.

  • Peyrébère: a lovely little family-friendly crescent-shaped beach in the north of the island. The water is placid and very shallow for several meters. Plenty of snacks and food trucks create a lively atmosphere.
  • Mont Choisy: also located in the north, this larger beach boasts a picturesque postcard-worthy setting. Here too, children can enjoy swimming safely, with dining options available.
  • Flic en Flac: found in the West, this is the emblematic beach of the region. It’s ideal with its white sand, clear waters, a row of filao trees for shade, and many food trucks offering Mauritian snacks and fresh fruits.
  • La Cuvette: this tiny beach at Grand Baie wins hearts with its friendly atmosphere and ‘secret beach’ vibe. It’s often frequented by locals, so it’s a chance to get away from the tourist crowds.
  • Bain Bœuf: a stunning beach in the North with views of the Coin de Mire islet, lined with beautiful villas. A quiet beach away from the tourist crowds, it’s an ideal setting to peacefully enjoy the lagoon.
  • Le Morne: Le Morne beach is one of the most beautiful in Mauritius, situated in the southwest, right at the base of the mountain. The scenery is stunning and perfect for creating wonderful family memories.

Family Hiking in Mauritius

Do you enjoy nature outings and are you looking for beautiful hikes you can do with your children in Mauritius?

Here are the ones I recommend, with length and difficulty suited for the young ones:

1. Coastal Stroll between Tamarin and Flic en Flac

Here’s an easy and pleasant walk that follows the ocean between Tamarin and Flic-en-Flac on the West coast.

Start at the Tamarin public beach (parking available) and head right towards the estuary, where the Tamarin River meets the Indian Ocean. Cross it and off you go on a 2.5-hour seafront stroll!

The trail skirts the beach, weaves through rocks, and passes a small forest (where you’ll find a lovely little secret beach!). All along, you will be accompanied by the sublime views of the lagoon.

You’ll pass luxury hotels before reaching Wolmar and then Flic-en-Flac. For the brave, continue to Villa Caroline beach (7km in total).

And for the return journey, you have 2 options: bus or walk. The choice is yours, depending on how you feel!

My Advice

It works in the opposite direction too: Flic-en-Flac ? Tamarin. It’s just as nice!

tamarin flic en flac walk
tamarin flic en flac walk

2. Hiking at Black River Gorges National Park

The Black River Gorges National Park welcomes you with 60km of walking trails to explore the largest natural reserve on Mauritius Island.

There are several possible routes of different levels.

If you plan on hiking at Black River Gorges with children, I recommend:

  • The Gorges Viewpoint trail: it’s the easiest hike in the park. The path is well marked and the walk takes about 2.5 hours (it’s a round trip, not a loop).
  • The Piton Savanne trail: this one is for families who enjoy hiking! Set aside 4.5 hours of walking and some climbs to reach the summit of this accessible Mauritian mountain. You can do it without a problem with a child of at least 6 years old.

My Advice

The best way, in my opinion, to hike at Black River Gorges for the first time is to hire a guide!

This will allow you to walk with peace of mind, without fear of getting lost, and at the same time learn a lot about the animal and plant species you’ll encounter along the way.

For this guided trek, the walk lasts 3 hours and is limited to children over 10 years old.

3. Tropical Stroll in the Bel Ombre Reserve

Another great spot for family walks in Mauritius is the Bel Ombre Nature Reserve, in the south of the island.

The Two Waterfalls Trail is an easy walk that takes you into the heart of wild Mauritian nature. Within 2 hours, you’ll pass through forests, valleys, and rivers, with the reward of two magnificent waterfalls!

And as a bonus, a picnic at the foot of Frederica waterfall. Kids love it!

A few details to note:

  • Guide required (but it’s cool, they know all the local secrets!)
  • Journey by 4×4 to the start (safari vibes!)
  • Not permitted for children under 8 years old (some passages are a bit rock’n’roll)

So, are you ready for this total immersion into Mauritian nature? Put on your hiking shoes, prepare your camera, and off you go!

Book your guide now to hike with your family in Bel Ombre Reserve via the button below:

4. Hiking in the Ferney Valley

If you’re staying in or just passing through the southeast of Mauritius, you should definitely check out the Ferney Valley, near Mahébourg.

This nature reserve offers an easy 5 km walk that’s perfect for kids. In about 2 hours round trip, you’ll pass through sugarcane fields, a forest-lined valley, and lush green hills (the landscape always reminds me of the Hobbit’s Shire!).

On the agenda: a small river to cross, giant tortoises to observe, and a nursery of endemic trees to discover.

Entrance fee: 8€ per person (there are also guided walking or 4×4 tours available upon reservation through the official website).

A tip: make sure to bring hats, sunscreen, and plenty of water for the whole family, as the Mauritian sun can be intense in this little green paradise!

5. Hiking on Chamarel Mountain at Sunrise or Sunset

Lastly, for stunning views over the southwest coast of Mauritius, you should definitely go on a guided hike up Chamarel Mountain, either early in the morning or towards the evening.

The climb is quite challenging and is only suitable for children aged 8 and above. Once at the top, you can sit down to enjoy the spectacular show of the sunrise or sunset over the ocean, depending on the time you choose.

The hike takes about 2.5 hours and requires a good level of fitness.

If you’re up for it, it’s a wonderful experience to share with your family at the start or end of the day.

Of course, this list is not exhaustive.

I have plenty more ideas and my best advice for hiking in Mauritius in my detailed article: Hiking in Mauritius – Complete Guide

What are the best family resorts in Mauritius?

You wonder where to stay in Mauritius with family?

When planning a family trip to Mauritius, choosing the right accommodation is, of course, essential.

If you decide to stay in a hotel (they are all luxurious in Mauritius), then I recommend choosing one with a kids club.

In my opinion, it’s the best solution: it allows your kids to have fun and make friends under the supervision of professionals, while you get some time for yourself to relax.

Also, consider the all-inclusive package offered by many hotels in Mauritius, which is also particularly beneficial for families.

An All-Inclusive hotel, means the total price includes not only accommodation, but also food, drinks, and some activities.

This way, you eliminate the stress of unexpected expenses and can fully enjoy your vacation without worrying about the final bill!

It’s especially more convenient with children or teenagers, who often have insatiable appetites ?? They can indulge at any time without you having to count each meal or snack.

Finally, many all-inclusive hotels in Mauritius also offer activities suitable for young ones, from water sports to creative workshops, ensuring that every family member has a memorable stay.

Therefore, I advise you to select a hotel that offers these options (all-inclusive and kids club) for a carefree family holiday where everyone has fun and relaxes.

What’s the Best Time to Visit Mauritius with Family?

Mauritius is all about sunshine and mild weather almost year-round, making it a fantastic choice for family holidays at any time.

However, if you want to avoid little troubles, you should steer clear of the cyclone season, which runs from January to the end of March. Conditions can be a bit unpredictable with storms and rain possibly disrupting your plans.

For families with small children, I recommend visiting Mauritius during the austral winter, between May and October.

It’s the time when temperatures are ideal and humidity is much lower than in summer. It’s the best season for your little ones to enjoy the beaches and outdoor activities without being overwhelmed by the heat.

You’ll be able to enjoy sunny days, explore the wonders of the island, and have all this family fun in a more pleasant setting.

What’s the Budget for a Family Vacation in Mauritius?

That’s going to depend on a lot of factors:

  • the number of people in your family
  • your interests, which will determine the type of activities and visits you want to do
  • the type of accommodation you will choose (luxury hotel, all-inclusive or not, or perhaps an apartment or villa rental)
  • the time of year you visit Mauritius
  • and of course, the duration of your stay.

All these aspects can really make prices vary a lot!

The only somewhat stable thing is the flight ticket price, which is around €1000 per person.

Considering all this, I can’t really estimate the budget for your family vacation in Mauritius here.

Travel Insurance for Mauritius: My Advice

My Advice

Many travelers mistakenly think (wrongly) that healthcare in Mauritius is affordable and that they don’t need travel insurance. But in reality, the public healthcare system is fragile, and even the slightest consultation in a private clinic is very expensive!

That’s why it is essential to take out travel insurance with good medical coverage before you leave.

To travel safely, I recommend the following 2 insurances (both include epidemic guarantee – like Covid-19, which is very important!)
